THE SHEFFIELD PREDATORS MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR SEASON OPENER WITH A HUGE 84-0 WIN AGAINST STAFFORDSHIRE SURGE
The Sheffield Predators entered the new season with some anticipation with a false start last week when the game away as Staffordshire was postponed due to technical difficulties arising from transfer of players and staff, the guys were chomping at the bit to get going.
With the sun shining on Dronfield the Predators won the toss and decided to receive the ball, but from the kick off rustiness was evident as the return team let the ball evade them no one being decisive enough and the Surge recovered in great territorial position.
The drive stumbled for a couple of plays but a pass interference call put the surge on the 4 yard line but an interception in his own endzone, The Ball was then on the Predators own 20yd line for the first offensive play of the new. A Running Back counter play saw Darren Gayle #10 break free and take the ball all the way to the endzone for what we thought was a 80yd run but his high stepping into the end zone was flagged for as over celebrating and a 15 yard penalty the ball placed on the Surge 15 yard line.
2 plays later Ollie Cullen #24 on 6 yard run got the predators on the Board Tom Moxon with a run for the 2pt conversion was good 8 – 0 predators. That was Cullens first ever predator score having spent most of last season as back up for Saul and Gayle at running back.
The surge had the ball for two plays after the KO and gave the ball back on a fumble recover. Dave Smith#5 and his offence enter t he field in good position and a Smith 35yrd pass to rookie Tight End Tim Darrocott #80 for a TD with 2pts added made the score 16-0.
Again after the KO the surge could not move the ball on predators much but punted away deep into the predators half of the field. The predators started the next drive the deepest they had been - Darren Gayle #10 took the handoff and ran in for an 83 yard TD the 2pts conversion was no good so the score still in the 1st qtr was 22-0.
Taking nothing away from the slick performance of the offence but the Defence was showing well also and were stifling any surge attack they could muster they already had 1 interception 2 fumble recovers and 2 sacks in the 1st qtr it was going to be a long day for the Surge.
The possession saw them drive down the field and cap a good offensive series off with a 4 yard TD run by Darren Gayle # 10 the 2 pt con was no good so the score at the end of the qtr was 28 – 0 predators.
Early in the 2nd the predators were relentless and rookie Sam Adekanmbi burst through the surge defence for 9 yd TD 2 pts attempt no good leaving the score 34 – 0
The predators defence held firm again on the surge next possession the Surge high snapped a punt attempt and it sailed out the back of the endzone for a safety another 2 pts for predators. Score now 36-0 and still in first half.
A good crowd in the sunshine were witnessing some great individual and collective performances and the Predators were now cutting loose a bit, Jacob Muncey # 44 now stepped up and scored 38 yard run TD the 2 pts con was good taking the score to 44 – 0 with 8 min left in the half.
The Surge were held again on the next possession and the predators offence were back on the field with around 3 mins to the half. Dave Smith#5 found Tim Darrcott#80 once again with a 9 yard pass for TD, the 2pts con failed so with little or not time left it was 50 – 0
On the 2 nd play of their driver the Surge were hit with a fumble recovery and the predators defence had a few seconds on the field again before the half, a Dave Smith #5 51 yard pass to Ollie Cullen #24 for a TD finished the half as it had started for the predators the 2pts con was no good so at the half the score was 56-0
In the second half it was an ideal time for the predators coach to blood some rookies and allow them to experience true battle rather then just practice a nearly full new O line started the 2nd half and the Jacob Muncey #44 came in at QB.
Jacob Muncey had an instant success with the ball in hand and a 1 yard run into the end zone where he fumble only for Jon Mahoney #75 an O linemen to dive on the loose ball for a TD in the 3rd qtr made the score 62 -0 Marc Austin #30 came in as kicker and the extra point was good, 63-0
The second half was just as hard for the surge the were slaving away in the trenches but really failing to make any impression on both sides of the ball, and were getting comprehensively beaten. The predators were now opening their playbook and trying to show the crowd that the were not a one dimensional team and Robin Beal #89 on a reverse ran in from 25 yards for the predators 10th TD Austin with PAT was good and the score racked up to 70-0.
The defence were now dominating as well and a errant pass from the Surge
QB was picked off by Aden Flannagan #9 and he duly returned it 27 yards for a defence TD, Austin’s PAT was good and the score tick over to 77 -0 End of the 3rd qtr.
The 4th qtr slowed down a bit and a couple of change of possession and both teams punting led to a final drive by the predators offence.
Having not had a reliable kicker for two years hence the predators now seem to have found another piece in the growing armoury, the drove down field and from 25 yards our attempted a field goal, the snapped was muffed and the ball sailed over the kickers head, Austin picked the ball up beat a few tacklers and ran the ball in from 27 yards for another predator TD the predators had now scored in all aspects of the game, and Austin #30 converted his own TD the score now 84-0.
The game clock ran out, and the Predators had their best points tally ever in a game, having over 500 yards of offence,
